Bikofsky, Burton Help Keep Newton South Undefeated

Seniors Sophie Bikofsky and Kendall Burton combined for more than half of South's total points scored.

Going into last night's Dual County League matchup between the Lady Hawks of Waltham High School and the Lady Lions of Newton South, the teams were 0-2, and 2-0, respectively.

After last night, keeps that undefeated record, as the team took down Waltham in a sold 87-35 win.

Senior, captain, and soon-to-be Villanova Wildcat, Kendall Burton lead the way with 29 points, while classmate and co-captain Sophie Bikofsky dropped 20 in the 52-point defeat.

"It was definitely a strong game," Burton said. "The defense looked good and we played as a team. And when that happens, it turns out to be successful."

Head coach Sam Doner was happy that his team picked up a win, especially in the field goal category.

"We played together as a team," Doner said. "We found the hot hand and players hit their shots (in) the right place."

Bikofsky, who will play at Brown University next winter, called this game a "confidence booster."

"We played as a team," Bikofsky said. "We treated every possession like it's the last and it really motivates our team and keeps us working hard."

The hard work paid off for Newton South, but Bikofsky says it is time to put this game behind them.

"Our work is paying off," she said, "but what's done is done and the game is in the past. We just need to keep looking forward."

Burton says her team does not look at wins and losses. Instead, they use that time to prepare for their next opponent.

The Lady Lions' next opponent will be on Dec. 29 at home against Nichols Prep from Buffalo, N.Y.
